Brief History

In the 1960’s, Purge and Trap (P&T) was used in the study of bodily fluids. In the mid-to-late 1970’s, P&T became a technique that was well-known and widely applied due the need to monitor VOCs in drinking water. Using this technique, it was possible to detect sup-ppb level VOCs of a wide variety. Today, P&T is routinely applied in the environmental area for the analysis of VOCs in soil and water. The arrival of microprocessor-driven systems allows the concentrator to be more precise and automated, giving the operator more time for other projects.

When using a concentrator system, a good grasp of the fundamentals will help you prevent problems and assist you when you are faced with tasks such as method development and troubleshooting.

Atomx

The Atomx Automated VOC Sample Preparation system combines an Autosampler and Purge and Trap into a single instrument for the analysis of VOCs in soils and waters. This is the first of its kind and only system that employs a unique methanol extraction automation feature for high level soils in accordance with USEPA Method 5035.

Extractasol clean-up step in the Atomx reduces carryover or cross contamination normally associated with high-level water or soil analysis. Three new independent injection systems for internal standards, surrogates, and matrix spikes provide the ability to select variable volumes without generating waste.

The Atomx features Tekmar’s proven carousel drive capable of holding 80 vials for optimal throughput therefore reducing downtime. While priced competitively, this system offers unique features that cannot be found on other sample prep systems on the market today.

Lumin Purge

In 1974, Tekmar developed an idea that revolutionized the way laboratories performed Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) testing. Since then, Tekmar has continued to build on the foundation of the initial Purge and Trap technique one innovative layer at a time. The Lumin builds on seven previous generations, making us the industry’s cornerstone of technique and support.

The fundamentals of Purge and Trap are time proven. By bubbling a purge gas through your sample matrix, the VOCs are removed and collected on an analytical trap. After the purging is complete, the trap is heated and the VOCs are released and delivered to a gas chromatograph for separation and detection. The Lumin uses components that are absolutely essential to perform a successful Purge and Trap analysis; those being an electronic mass flow controller (MFC), superior trapping technology, and inert sample pathway.

The heart and soul of all of our Purge and Trap Systems is the Teledyne Hastings Mass Flow Controller. The MFC delivers the purge gas with unmatched precision and accuracy. The most advantageous feature of utilizing the MFC is the ability to instantaneously change the gas flows via the Teklink software, at any time during the Purge and Trap process.

The Teledyne Tekmar U-shaped trap offers trapping benefits that have never been seen before by Purge and Trap concentrators. The U-shaped trap is capable of adsorbing the VOCs of interest while minimizing the collection of unwanted compounds, such as water. The ultra-fast trap heater ensures that the U-shaped trap is desorbed rapidly and the VOCs are delivered to the GC system quickly. Just as importantly, the Lumin cools the trap faster than ever, thanks to an improved fan, and dedicated ductwork. These features allow precise control of the trap cooling air, reducing total run time and increasing sample throughput.

The key to minimizing carryover is the Lumin’s inert sample pathway. The tubing and fittings have been treated to provide unprecedented low carryover which permits the user to calibrate with more confidence.

AQUATek 100

AQUATek-100

The AQUATek 100 is a purge and trap autosampler that automates the sample preparation steps for the analysis of liquid samples utilizing a fixed volume sample loop filled using a pressurization gas. Two independent volume programmable internal standards are then added to the sample and the entire aliquot is transferred to the Purge and Trap for compound concentration and subsequent separation and detection using a GC/GC-MS quantification system.

The AQUATek 100 brings to market the latest engineering enhancements that have been employed in Tekmar’s latest sample preparation lines. In addition, newer materials in the field of inertness and advanced intelligent software controls have been incorporated. These features combined with greater vial capacity and increased sample handling speed will offer customers greater flexibility and increased throughput to help their production needs all while maintaining a low cost of ownership.

Static Headspace analysis is a time-tested and robust technique for the analysis of volatile compounds in almost any matrix. The popularity of the technique is due to Headspace analysis providing a clean, reliable result.

Teledyne Tekmar draws on our experience as a leader in low-level VOC analysis with the introduction of a next generation Headspace instrument, the HT3™ Static and Dynamic Headspace System.

Dramatic improvements in sensitivity are achieved with the new Dynamic Headspace option, while maintaining the ruggedness and reliability of a traditional Static Headspace instrument.​

Versa Automated Headspace Vial Sampler

Versa

Static headspace is one of the most popular techniques due to its versatility for analyzing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in a complex variety of matrices. This is due to the elimination of tedious sample preparation steps and prevents contamination problems that are common to other sample introduction techniques. Teledyne Tekmar draws on our experience as a leader in low-level VOC analysis with the introduction of this companion autosampler to the Headspace product line.

Versa is the perfect solution for applications which require all the advantages of headspace analysis and is economical to fit any budget.

The Versa can quickly and accurately identify residual solvents in bulk or finished pharmaceuticals as prescribed in the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) and it meets all of the guidelines per USP Method <467>.
